30.9.2002 there was 104 Belletts, 9 Florians and 2 Elfs registered for road use in Finland. Our club has now about 90 members. So we have got a very big percent of the owners of existing Isuzus as our members. Our club magazine comes out twice in a year and also a pair of newsletters.

Isuzu Motors Ltd started to make commercial cars in 1916 and it made passenger cars from 1953 to 1993. F.ex Belletts were made between 1963 – 1973. Today, passenger cars are sold with the name of Isuzu but they are basically Hondas and they have only Isuzu name badges. Isuzu has always been a minor manufacturer of passenger cars and a very big manufacturer of commercial vehicles as trucks, buses, pickups and other diesel vehicles and Isuzu has also made diesel engines for other manufacturers. Nowadays Isuzus commercial vehicles are sold in Finland under the name of Opel because General Motors owns 49% of Isuzu Motors Ltd.

Usually people don´t know how rare car is f.ex Isuzu Bellett as we think it globally. About 6400 Belletts were imported to Finland and only in Australia they imported more Belletts. In Finland the Belletts are left hand drive and so they are even more rare because in Japan and Australia Belletts are right hand drive.

Most of the Belletts that came here were 4-door sedans with 1471cc 71hp and later 81hp OHV engines. Fifteen 2-door Sports with 1584cc 90hp OHV and later with 1584cc SOHC engines came also. The top models were the GT:s with OHV or SOHC engines (same as in Sports) or 1584cc twincam (DOHC) with 120hp. These GTR:s were very fast. 0-100km/h under 8 seconds, 0-400 meters in 16,4 and top speed was 190km/h. 3 this kind of engines came to Finland and 2 were made from parts here by the importer Suomen Koneliike Oy. They were tuned to give 150hp for rally use. The most famous Isuzu rally drivers were Timo Salonen, Pentti Airikkala, Osmo Mäkelä and Pertti ”Konsta” Kärhä. Nowadays Timo Hytönen from Vaajakoski keeps on driving historic rallys with Kärhäs ex car. With his co-driver Kari Hytönen they have won their class f.ex in Czech Vtava-rally, 1000 Lakes Historic Rally in Jyväskylä Finland and RAC Historic Rally in England. In year 2001 they went to San Remo Historic Rally held in Italy and took the first place in their class.

Belletts are very suitable for rally use, because the body is very strong, it has separate suspension in every wheel, stabilizers front and rear, fast rack and pinion steering (2,9 rounds), 53% of the weight is on the front wheels and 47% on rear (it´s more stabile than many mid engine sportcars) and it allows 53 degrees cant before it goes on it´t side.

Because many of our club members have tuned Isuzus, we have our own club racing day in every year when we can see who has the fastest Isuzu this time.

Of course the main work these old Isuzus have done was to carry ordinary people from place to another as family cars. As the temperature in Finland can go as low as –30 celcius, Isuzus were famous of how they always started whatever the weather or temperature was. The importer Suomen Koneliike gave a guarantee of that.
